Thanks netgalley for giving me this book in exchange for an honest review!
This was meant to be the perfect trip.
The Northern Lights. A luxury press launch on a boutique cruise ship.
A chance for travel journalist Lo Blackwood to recover from a traumatic break-in that has left her on the verge of collapse, and to work out what she wants from her relationship.
Except things don’t go as planned.
Woken in the night by screams, Lo rushes to her window to see a body thrown overboard from the next door cabin. But the records show that no-one ever checked into that cabin, and no passengers are missing from the boat.
Exhausted, emotional and increasingly desperate, Lo has to face the fact that her sleep problems might be driving her mad or she is trapped on a boat with a murderer – and she is the sole witness..
I liked this book from the very beginning I started reading it. Before reading it, I had no idea what it was about but I had heard some good things about the author so I really wanted to read it.
It starts of great, with the main character Lo getting burgled and her being absolutely terrified days after. That alone really made me want to read more and the book kept up the chilling and suspenseful atmosphere throughout the whole book.
Lo herself is a great character, she definitely has her fair share of flaws and problems but she deals with them the best she can and is an overall strong female character.
Pretty soon after Lo enters the cruise it becomes clear that something is off and wrong, even though I couldn't put my finger on it.
After Lo witnesses a murder she tries finding out who is responsible, despite no one really believing her and I probably suspected everyone on the cruise at least once but still didn't get it right.
The fact that even Lo herself can't be 100 percent sure that what she saw and heard actually happened made everything even more suspenseful and at some point I even thought she was plain crazy.
The pace definitely picks up a lot after about 60 percent of the book and after that I couldn't put it down, I just had to find out what was happening. The way everything unraveled was great and well thought through. But I have to say that the ending got a little bit confusing to me and I wasn't exactly sure what had actually happened but the parts I did understand completely took me by surprise.
Overall I highly recommend this book to all crime and thriller readers out there and anyone else who is even a little bit interested. I myself am looking forward to reading more by Ruth Ware.
