Warm Bodies

Warm Bodies
author: Isaac Marion
published: October 28th 2010
pages: 240
my rating: 3.5 stars

'R' is a zombie. He has no name, no memories and no pulse, but he has dreams. He is a little different from his fellow Dead.

Amongst the ruins of an abandoned city, R meets a girl. Her name is Julie and she is the opposite of everything he knows - warm and bright and very much alive, she is a blast of colour in a dreary grey landscape. For reasons he can't understand, R chooses to save Julie instead of eating her, and a tense yet strangely tender relationship begins.

This has never happened before. It breaks the rules and defies logic, but R is no longer content with life in the grave. He wants to breathe again, he wants to live, and Julie wants to help him. But their grim, rotting world won't be changed without a fight...

Zombie books aren't usually my thing but I made an exception with this one. I don't think there are many books written from a zombies point of view out there and certainly even less love stories from a zombies point of view.

I had already watched the movie before reading the book and although I thought the movie was incredibly cheesy I was still excited to read the book.
To my relief the book wasn't quite as cheesy as the movie and while it does focus on the love story there is more detail on the other aspects of the story. The explanations as to why everything happened the way it did where still a little unsatisfying though.

The way zombies, in particularly R, are portrayed in this book were really interesting. They (or at least R) weren't totally mindless but detached from their body and unable to express and thoughts or actions the way a human can.

Because R is a zombie and zombies tend to be not that active the book was a bit slow in the beginning but then picked up a bit in pace. R's thoughts were almost philosophical and great to read about and the writing style was really good as well.

So even though it was a bit cheesy and a bit slow paced I enjoyed it a lot and might give some other zombie books more of a chance in the future (if you know some good ones feel free to recommend them to me!).
