Demon Road

Demon Road
author: Derek Landy
published: January 1st 2015 by HarperCollins Children's Books
pages: 507
my rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Full of Landy’s trademark wit, action and razor sharp dialogue, DEMON ROAD kicks off with a shocking opener and never lets up the pace in an epic road-trip across the supernatural landscape of America. Killer cars, vampires, undead serial killers: they’re all here. And the demons? Well, that’s where Amber comes in...Sixteen years old, smart and spirited, she’s just a normal American teenager until the lies are torn away and the demons reveal themselves.

Forced to go on the run, she hurtles from one threat to another, revealing a tapestry of terror woven into the very fabric of her life. Her only chance rests with her fellow travellers, who are not at all what they appear to be…

When I saw this book on the shelf I couldn't resist buying it. I love Derek Landy's series Skulduggery Pleasant and I just knew that I would love this book as well. Spoiler alert: I did.

Amber has to flee from her parents who – like her – are demons with red skin, horns, everything. Not only are they demons they also want to kill her. That's a pretty awesome premise for a book if you ask me.
I think no one will argue with me when I say Amber has the worst parent ever invented. They are completely and utterly evil and unfortunately also extremely powerful.
But not only her parents are demons – Amber is too and that actually made me really liking the way demons are portrayed here.

Even though the premise for this book sounds really dark, I wasn't quite expecting it to be that dark. It's morbid and gruesome and Ambers parents aren't the only bad guys that she encounters on her journey.

Derek Landy is great at writing characters: no character is ever truly good and he is amazing at writing completely insane serial killers. And somehow he also manages to make it funny.
Amber herself is a great character, she is badass and powerful but also scared at what's coming. Amber, Milo and Glen reminded me a lot of Skulduggery Pleasant, Valkyrie and Flynn Fletcher but the individual characters where different enough that it didn't bother me.

I loved pretty much every single word of Demon Road and can't wait to read the next book.
